2. How much yard do you want to look at?
Solid wood and vinyl give you the most privacy but they wall off the view. Ornamental aluminum or three-rail keeps your sightlines open. There’s no right answer — it’s about what you want to see from the kitchen window.
3. How much maintenance do you actually want to do?
Wood is gorgeous but it needs staining every few years to stay that way. Vinyl and aluminum are install-it-and-forget-it. If you’re not the type to spend a weekend on a fence in five years, factor that in now.
The cheapest fence is the one you only build once.
4. What’s the budget — and what’s the lifetime?
Chain link wins on day-one cost. Vinyl wins over twenty years. Wood sits in between but depends entirely on whether it gets stained. We always quote what your fence costs to own, not just install — that’s where the honest conversation lives.
