Georgia weather is rough on bare wood. UV bleaches it gray. Humidity warps the boards. Rain finds every seam. A fence that looked sharp on installation day is faded and tired within two summers — unless you stain it.
What staining actually does
- UV protection — keeps the color rich instead of fading to gray
- Moisture barrier — water beads off instead of soaking in
- Rot prevention — sealed wood doesn’t grow the fungus that breaks it down
- Curb appeal — a freshly stained fence reads as cared-for
Why prep is the whole job
Anyone can spray stain on a fence. Doing it right takes prep — cleaning the wood, letting it dry, and applying stain that bonds with the surface instead of sitting on top. Stain over a dirty fence peels within a year. Stain over a properly prepped fence lasts.
How often should you re-stain?
For our area, plan on every 3-5 years depending on sun exposure. A fence in full Georgia sun will need it sooner than one in dappled shade.
